Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)

Haydn's nearly thirty years serving the Esterházy family in rural Hungary cut him off from Europe's musical mainstream. This isolation, he later claimed, forced him to become original.

His 106 symphonies established the form that Mozart and Beethoven would inherit. His 68 string quartets did the same for chamber music. Warm, generous, and blessed with dry wit that permeated his compositions, Haydn was genuinely beloved. When Beethoven - difficult as ever - studied under him, Haydn responded with characteristic grace.
