George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)

German-born, Italian-trained, and English by adoption, Handel worked in London for nearly five decades. His Messiah, composed in just 24 days, has been performed continuously for over 270 years.

Blindness in his final years didn't stop him from performing organ concertos — he played from memory, improvising passages he could no longer see. Westminster Abbey granted him a state funeral, rare recognition for someone born outside England. The music had transcended nationality.
