Franz Liszt (1811-1886)

Liszt created what a German critic called "Lisztomania" - concert performances that triggered mass hysteria, with audiences fainting and rushing the stage. He invented the modern virtuoso performer: technically flawless and theatrically magnetic.

At the peak of his fame, he abandoned the concert stage, took minor holy orders, and devoted his remaining decades to teaching without payment. His students became the next generation's finest performers. He transformed the relationship between performer and audience, proving that musical performance could be as compelling as the music itself.
