Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)

Vivaldi spent most of his career as a priest and violin teacher at a Venetian orphanage for girls. From this unlikely position, he composed over 500 concertos with extraordinary speed and melodic gift.

The Four Seasons became one of the most recognized classical compositions ever written. Yet he died poor and forgotten in Vienna in 1741. Nearly two centuries passed before 20th-century musicologists rediscovered his full output and restored his reputation.
