ABOUT JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (1685–1750)

Bach spent most of his career as a church musician in provincial German towns, largely unknown outside the regions where he worked. He applied for better positions, was passed over for lesser men, and spent years in a frustrating post in Leipzig where his employers considered him difficult and his output excessive. He died in 1750 without knowing that he was the greatest composer who had ever lived.

The world took another eighty years to catch up. When Felix Mendelssohn revived the St Matthew Passion in 1829 - nearly a century after its composition - the audience encountered music of such structural complexity and emotional depth that it seemed to belong to no particular era at all. The Bach revival that followed transformed how Western music understood itself.

His output is staggering in both quantity and quality. The Well-Tempered Clavier, the Brandenburg Concertos, the Mass in B Minor, the Goldberg Variations - each a landmark, collectively an achievement without parallel in the history of music. He worked within the forms and constraints of his time and somehow transcended them entirely.

He had twenty children. He never traveled far from home. He changed everything anyway.
