ABOUT ANTONIO VIVALDI (1678–1741)
Vivaldi was ordained as a priest at twenty-five and spent most of his career teaching violin at an orphanage for girls in Venice. It was not the life anyone would have predicted for the man who became the most performed Baroque composer in history.
He composed with extraordinary speed and productivity - over 500 concertos, 46 operas, and dozens of sacred works in a career spanning four decades. His gift was for melody of such immediate emotional power that it felt inevitable, as though the music had always existed and he had simply written it down. The Four Seasons, composed around 1720, remains one of the most recognized pieces of classical music ever written - a work that prefigured the Romantic era's obsession with nature by nearly a century.
He fell out of fashion in his final years, died in poverty in Vienna in 1741, and was buried in a pauper's grave. For nearly two centuries his work was largely forgotten. It was only in the 20th century that musicologists rediscovered the full breadth of his output and restored him to his rightful place.
The music had been waiting. It always was.
