ABOUT PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY (1840–1893)
Tchaikovsky came to music late by the standards of his era. He studied law, worked as a civil servant, and didn't enter the St Petersburg Conservatory until he was twenty-one. He graduated three years later and never looked back.
He composed with an emotional directness that set him apart from both his Russian contemporaries and the European mainstream. Where Brahms constructed with architectural precision and Wagner built vast mythological structures, Tchaikovsky wrote music that seemed to go straight to the nerve. His three great ballets - Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker - transformed ballet music from functional accompaniment into serious composition. His last three symphonies, particularly the Sixth, the Pathétique, are among the most emotionally searching works in the orchestral repertoire.
He struggled throughout his life with depression, a difficult marriage, and the need to conceal his private life in a society that would not have accepted it. Those struggles found their way into the music - not as self-pity but as something more universal, a quality of longing that audiences across cultures have recognized and responded to for over a century.
He died in 1893, nine days after the premiere of the Pathétique Symphony. The circumstances remain disputed. The music remains irreplaceable.
