ABOUT FRANZ SCHUBERT (1797–1828)
Schubert produced more music in thirty-one years than most composers manage in a lifetime - and barely lived to hear any of it performed.
Born in Vienna and trained at the Imperial Court Chapel, he spent his entire life in the city of his birth, moving between modest lodgings, teaching piano to fund his composing, and writing with a productivity that defied both his circumstances and his health. Over 600 songs, nine symphonies, chamber works, piano pieces, and choral compositions - most of it created between 1813 and 1828, almost none of it published while he was alive.
His song cycle Winterreise is one of the most searching explorations of grief and solitude in the Western canon. His String Quintet in C major, completed in the final weeks of his life, is regularly placed among the greatest chamber works ever written. His late piano sonatas reward a kind of patient, interior listening that feels entirely modern. He composed the way other people breathe - not because it was easy, but because he couldn't stop.
The performances he did receive were intimate - gatherings of friends in Viennese apartments, evenings built around his music and his presence at the piano, known as Schubertiaden. He served as a torchbearer at Beethoven's funeral in 1827 and died the following year at thirty-one. The world spent decades catching up to what he had left behind.
