ABOUT JOSEPH HAYDN (1732–1809)
Haydn spent nearly thirty years as court composer to the Esterházy family in rural Hungary, isolated from the main currents of European musical life. He later said it was the making of him. Cut off from outside influence, he was forced to be original.
He was the most prolific and structurally innovative composer of his age. His 106 symphonies didn't just populate the concert repertoire - they defined what a symphony could be, establishing the forms and relationships between movements that Mozart and Beethoven would inherit and transform. His 68 string quartets did the same for chamber music. He didn't invent these forms from nothing, but he developed them with such consistency and intelligence that they emerged from his hands as something entirely new.
He was also genuinely beloved - warm, generous, and possessed of a dry humor that found its way into his music. His two great oratorios, The Creation and The Seasons, composed in his late sixties, were received with a rapture that moved him to tears at their premieres.
Beethoven studied under him, learned from him, and spent years being difficult about it. Haydn was gracious in return. Some teachers are like that.
