ABOUT BARUCH SPINOZA (1632–1677)
In 1656, Spinoza was excommunicated from his Amsterdam synagogue - one of the harshest such sentences ever recorded. The charges were never specified. What's certain is that his ideas were considered too dangerous to tolerate.
He spent the rest of his life quietly grinding lenses, living simply, and writing philosophy that would reshape Western thought. His masterwork, Ethics, presented a vision of God not as a personal deity but as synonymous with nature itself - infinite, rational, and indifferent to human affairs. It was published only after his death.
Spinoza's work laid the foundations of modern secular philosophy, religious tolerance, and rational ethics. He remains one of history's most original and uncompromising minds.
