ABOUT BARUCH SPINOZA (1632–1677)
In 1656, Spinoza was excommunicated from his Amsterdam synagogue in one of the harshest such sentences ever recorded. The charges were never formally specified. What's certain is that his ideas were considered too dangerous to tolerate.
He spent the rest of his life quietly grinding lenses, living simply, and writing philosophy that would reshape Western thought. His masterwork, Ethics, presented a vision of God not as a personal deity but as synonymous with nature itself - infinite, rational, and indifferent to human affairs. It was published only after his death.
Spinoza's arguments for freedom of thought and secular government laid foundations that the Enlightenment would later build upon. His influence runs through Locke, Jefferson, and every liberal democracy that followed. He remains one of history's most original and uncompromising minds.
